Validating 5G with IoT
In this chapter, we will provide an overview of the newest cellular technology, called 5G or 5G New Radio (NR), which has been deployed primarily in the US, China, Japan, and South Korea with 198 commercial 5G networks launched globally as of May 2022 [Global System for Mobile Communications (GSMA), May 2022]. The 5G standard was released in the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Release 15 in 2018 and, as shown in Figure 5.1, was designed to address the three key service areas of mission-critical control with Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communications (URLLC), enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) with high data rates and capacity, and massive IoT or massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC) with low complexity and ...
