Routable and private addresses

IP addresses are designed for providing routing functions on the internet. However, some networks can still be private and not connected to the internet. The IP address schema defined IP address pools called private IP address blocks that can be used for organizations to address the hosts within their networks that are isolated from the internet. These addresses are defined in RFC1918 and are sometimes also referred to as RFC 1918 address blocks.
