Network Address Translation

Network Address Translation (NAT) is done to conserve public IP addresses within an organization. This allows users with private IP addresses to access the public internet. A NAT gateway translates the source IP address of the outgoing packets from private to public IP addresses and keeps a track of the private to public IP address mapping. This mapping is then used to translate back the incoming packets where the destination IP address is converted from the mapped public IP address to the original private IP address, thereby allowing bi-directional flow of packets.
