FR encapsulation

FR encapsulation is different from the framed E1 encapsulation. We have seen in the previous section that we can create separate 64 kbps links on a single controller. The point to note is that these channels are multiplexed in time, and if one channel is not being utilized by the user, that bandwidth is still reserved, and cannot be used by another user who is using another channel. Frame relay encapsulation creates logical channels and allows the use of spare bandwidth on the free channels. Each logical circuit on an FR interface is identified by a Data Link Channel Identifier (DLCI) number. The FR encapsulation is configured on a router, as shown in the following figure:
