Static routing

Static routing is generally used when the organization has a prefix that is assigned by the upstream ISP, and the organization has a single upstream ISP. Consider the organization shown in the following figure, which has an IP pool of 200.100.80.0/24 allocated by its ISP. This /24 prefix would be a part of the larger address block that is owned by the ISP, and would be advertised on the internet. The organization only has the option of pointing a default route to the internet on the internet WAN, and the ISP in turn points a route for the 200.100.80.0/24 prefix back to the organization:
