The earlier models of the Cisco APs supported a mode called the autonomous mode of deployment. This mode enabled each AP to be configured individually, either using the console port CLI or an inbuilt GUI.

As the number of wireless APs increased in the organization, administrators found it challenging to manage multiple devices, and a need was felt to find alternative means of configuring the access points without having the need to configure each AP independently. This led to a new network element known as a Wireless LAN controller (WLC) that provides a centralized means of managing the APs that are under its control.
