Physical versus logical topology

Let's consider the ring topology in the previous section. Let's assume that each switch has a group of users that all belong to the same VLAN and each switch has a separate VLAN. Since the VLANs terminate at layer 3 on the distribution switch, the trunk links that connect the various access switches just act like the physical medium for carrying traffic up to the core. From a logical layer 3 perspective, the topology will become like a star topology, as all access switches are logically connected to the distribution switch.
