Chapter 9. Business Process Architecture

Business processes, like systems, have physical structure, functional organization, and a collaborative behavior that strives to achieve specific goals. In other words, business processes have architecture. The components of a business process architecture (henceforth referred to as participants) are the people and systems involved in the business processes. The participants have physical structure, which we tend to think of in terms of both organizational structure and physical location. The participants are functionally organized, each having specific functional responsibilities. In addition, the participants collaborate to produce the business process’s expected results.
