Competencies are basically skill sets. The late Don Binsted was a much-respected authority on the design of management learning.1 Having widely surveyed the literature on learning in general and skill acquisition in particular, he suggested that an effective skill development process would contain three learning ingredients:

  • The opportunity for the learner to practice the skill and experience some feedback.
  • An alternative ‘model’ or demonstration of the skill to be learned.
  • Encouragement of the learner to reflect on what is intended or has been modelled or has been experienced.
