18CEO Inclusion Do's and Don'ts

It is the responsibility of the CEO of a company to set the standard, to live by that standard, and to also support and drive the DEI agenda. I see myself as a facilitator, someone who can support with the structures and engagement. But if it's not lived from the top, it will not work. I am pleased to say we have the mandate and that has made all the difference.

In December of 2019, the CEO of Airbnb announced in a company‐wide meeting that D&B (Diversity & Belonging) was one of the top three company transformations of the year. That DEIB leader, our co‐author Melissa, and team were able to charge into 2020 with the wind at their backs, the resources they needed, and many willing to help across the company. Now we all know the global headwinds of COVID‐19 that arose in March of 2020. Nevertheless, in the face of tumultuous times for the business, Airbnb's executives, leaders, and employees didn't abandon their commitment to DEIB like other companies during the pandemic. In fact, respecting it became a first principle as the company embarked on planning for layoffs to save the business.

CEOs need all the guidance on DEIB that they can get from trusted partners. Trusted partners that answer the CEOs' questions in private without judgment, also speak hard truths diplomatically, and identify potential fallout or outcomes from action or inaction, while also presenting options and solutions for moving forward. ...
