GLOBAL ATTENTION WAS DRAWN TO THE PROBLEM of escalating anthropogenic emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs)—gases that have heat-trapping properties—by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in 1988. It is the work of this organization that brought about the realization that the continuous accumulation of these gases in the atmosphere may have disastrous consequences on the habitability and life-support systems of the planet.
