5.14. Thermosetting Cyanate Ester Resins

The Department of Defense (DoD) leads a project “Cyanate Ester Composite Resins Derived from Renewable Polyphenol Sources (WP-1759)” to demonstrate the feasibility of converting polyphenols that are extracted or derived from sustainable and renewable plant sources to cyanate ester resins for use in high-performance polymer composites. Renewable resources include among others, creosote bush leaves and stems, vanillin, resveratrol, and single-ring systems derived from resorcylic acid.
Glass transition temperatures (Tg) are in the range of 150 up to 315°C (TMA) and thermal stability can reach 310°C (TGA-IR). Water uptake in these resins depends on the chemical structure.
