Chapter 11

HART communication

Abstract

This chapter describes the highway addressable remote transducer (HART) protocol used in the communication of smart transmitters to the control system, host systems, and handheld devices. It elaborates the protocol details, which help the reader in understanding the concepts and, hence, in designing the systems for better maintenance. The chapter also covers the HART technology, including details of physical and data link layers from a communication perspective, as well as communication modes, HART networks, and HART commands. It also discusses the application layer details, along with the concept of DDL, and benefits to the user.
