Empathy is the ability to read a person’s responses by imaginatively putting yourself in his or her place. Develop this skill by listening, and by asking questions that get to the root of concerns, so that you can lead discussions in a positive way.

Use your imagination and your past experience of similar situations to give you some clues as to what the other person is feeling.
