Chapter 10 n IQ Applied to Product Development 459
Develop the project plan for conducting the Process Improvement activities
of the Plan-Do-Check/Study-Act cycle. See Chapter 7, TIQM P4.1 for general
guidelines.
Plan a Product Quality Specification Process Improvement
The first part of planning (TIQM P4.2) is to analyze and identify the Root Cause
or Causes of the problem you seek to solve, such as “out-of-date content.” See
TIQM P4.2.1 “Analyze Root Causes of the IQ Problem” in Chapter 7. Analysis
of the Root Causes requires understanding the needs and expectations of the
Customers and facilitating the identification of precipitating causes to drill down
to and isolate the Root Causes.
Identify Causes of Poor Product Quality Specification Information
TIQM P4.2.1 walks you through this. Examples of (Root) Causes include:
Lack of attention to Information as an integral component of the Product

Specification
Specification and Machine Calibration are in
■n
incompatible units of measure.
Lack
■n
of Management Accountability for Product Specification data
Lack
■n
of a Change Control Procedure for Product data
Lack
■n
of Engineer’s or Product Developer’s understanding of Customer needs
Production control lacks the ability to translate Specifications to equip-
■n
ment Calibration.
Defective process for capturing Customers’ Requirements and Expectations
