Why Total Information Quality Management
Organizations cannot perform their work or accomplish their mission effectively
in the emerging realized Information Age without Quality Information. Most
organizations, however, lack information of sufficient quality to enable them to
have a competitive advantage. The implicit perception among most Executive
Leadership is that “our information must be ‘okay’ — after all, we are making a
profit.” The message in Chapter 1 should dispel this misconception that abounds
in organizations that do not have an Information Quality culture.
Purpose of the TIQM Quality System
Total Information Quality Management (TIQM) has two meanings. First, it is
the name of the Information Quality Management System I developed, begin-
ning in 1992. But secondly, and more importantly, it can refer to any Quality
System applied to information that addresses a holistic approach to managing
Information Quality and that is based on proven Quality Management Systems
(QMS), such as Deming, Juran, Crosby, Imai (Kaizen), the Baldrige Criteria, and
Six Sigma. It should address all aspects of Information Quality, including:
Quality of “Information Product Specification” data (data definition, valid
values, business rule specifications, information model correctness, and
database design stability, flexibility, and reuse)
