implemented an IQ Culture creating a Habit of Improvement sustainable from the
third year of their Transformation. In the oil production business, the key success
indicator is the “operating cost of barrel of oil equivalent.” David’s company has
the lowest operating cost among their competitors in the industry.
Consequences of Errors
Consequences of errors include:
New strategies are not implemented well.
■n
Acquisitions do not achieve expected synergies.
■n
Reengineering takes too long and costs too much.
■n
Downsizing does not get costs under control.
■n
Quality programs
■n
do not deliver hoped-for results.
The David Gleicher Model for Change
Lori Silverman introduced me to David Gleicher’s formula for Culture
Transformation, which transcends the older Kurt Lewin Model of Culture
Change.
31
Gleicher sees the formula for successful Culture Transformation as:
C = f (D × V × F > R),
where:
C = Culture Change
f = “is a function of”
D = Dissatisfaction with the status quo
× = “multiplied by”
V = Vision of positive possibility, more than absence of pain of status quo
F = First steps (first concrete actions toward accomplishing the Vision)
> = “is greater than”
R = Resistance to Change
If any of the components is missing, the following will occur:
Have
■n
D but no V or F = Frustration.
Have
■n
D and F but no V = Fad of the month.
