Beginning in the 1930s, Aetna insured a number of large-scale
projects. In 1931, it bonded the construction of the Hoover Dam. The fol-
lowing year, it bonded the construction of the National Archives Building
in Washington, D.C. It provided insurance coverage for the Manhattan
Project in 1944, and that same year, it became the first insurance com-
pany to advertise on television. In 1949, Aetna bonded the construction
of the United Nations headquarters in New York.
