Introduction
This chapter develops a theory of sustainable leadership that hinges upon the purposes toward which leadership is applied. Through synthesizing insights from the literatures of a wide range of fields, it argues that sustainable leadership must foster the long-term health, integrity, and resiliency of human communities and nature. Sustainable leadership, comprised of fitting responses to converging socio-ecological crises, is counter-hegemonic, inclusive, place-centered, and learned.
