Chapter 22. Out Of Office Settings

In Chapter 21, we talked about the telephone, espousing its usefulness in multi-party communication but lamenting its flaws when it comes to multi-party coordination. Well, nearly every telephone in the home today has a companion device. Often these devices are so integrated that we rarely think of them as ever having been separate. These devices are answering machines. These excellent telephone companion devices come in all shapes and sizes, but all are designed to deliver on essentially the same two features.
