Summary

Scanning, obviously, is composed of a little art and a little science. If you obey the rules—keeping the source material free from dust and lint, and scanning the image at a right angle to the scanner's platen—the “hard stuff” has been addressed, and you can spend more time on your personal creativity. Keep in mind the color modes, too. Evaluate a source image according to its color “needs,” and you can't go wrong. Although digital cameras are wildly popular these days, there's still a place in your artist's bag of tricks for a scanner. How else can you acquire flat artwork and take direct samples of flat stuff such as a waffle or some blades of grass?
