What Picture CD Is and Isn't

Before we talk about what Picture CD is, let's talk about what Picture CD isn't. Picture CD isn't for high-quality professional and commercial use. Nor is Picture CD for the non-professional who demands more than just average quality in his or her imaging.

Now that we know what Picture CD isn't, let's talk about “What it is, man!”

Before Picture CD, if you wanted to digitize your 35mm masterpieces, you had basically three choices: scan the photograph that was made from the film, scan the actual film (film scanners are expensive!), or have the negatives transferred to Photo CD (time- consuming and somewhat expensive). The most popular and the lowest long-term cost is the flat-bed scanner for scanning the prints. But ...
