Yoshihiko Kushimoto began surfi ng at the age
of twelve, and by the seventies had become one
of the most famous professional surfers in Japan.
Kushimoto’s design studio is named Ki Surf-
boards—Ki meaning “spirit” in Japanese.
Infl uenced by Samurai culture and values and
Zen philosophy, his designs refl ect concepts of
harmony with nature and fl ow. His boards vary
in length from 5 feet, 9 inches (1.7 m) to the
11-foot-plus (3.3 m) Big Gun boards used to ride
the big Hawaiian waves. ...
