The major reason to visualize a network is that we would like to know what the structure of the network intuitively looks like as a whole (if you can read an adjacency matrix and visualize it in your brain, pass on). In addition, the network is very often associated with additional attribute data. For example, in a biological interaction network, the protein nodes can have external links, annotations, and ontology tags.
