Effects divide into several categories.
Tonal-based effects (EQ, Smooth/enhance) work on the frequency content of the audio.
Time-based effects (reverb, delay) give a sense of space, such as the sound of a room, or add discreet repeats or echoes to the sound.
Modulation-based effects (amplitude, flange, chorus, phase, wah) are time-based effects that include modulation or resonance settings that change the effect over time.
