Media Basics
In the multimedia world, there are lots of file formats that are used by an ever-broadening number of editing, authoring, and playback applications. Most of these formats follow some standards that allow a number of applications, but nothing is available that will open every format. Sometimes, this can be frustrating as the average user tries to work with formats not destined for editing, such as the DivX or Xvid formats. Even MPEG was not designed for editing in lower bitrates, but many users want to edit lower grade media for family home video, school projects, and even corporate work.
