49. Is stress making you fat?
Any sort of stress can lead to weight gain.
Stress causes your body to release cortisol and this stimulates the fat-storing hormone, insulin. Insulin causes your body to hold on to its fat stores.
And that’s if you’re eating what you always ate. The trouble is that you might be sabotaging yourself without realising it. When we’re stressed there’s a tendency to overeat, especially carbohydrates. (It’s not called comfort food for nothing.) That’s because carbohydrates cause the brain to release serotonin and this is one of the feel-good hormones that raise mood. In a way, it’s a form of self-medication.
As is booze. Terrific at relaxing you. Fabulous for adding layers of fat around your waistline.
