Hydrogen production in IGCC systems

Claudio Allevi1 and Guido Collodi2,    1SARAS, Milano, Italy,    2Amec Foster Wheeler, Milano, Italy

Abstract

Hydrogen is currently used on a large scale in modern petroleum refineries and ammonia plants. It may also be used as an energy carrier for vehicles, for distributed heat, and for fuel cells power generation. Moreover, hydrogen can be stored without relevant technical problems, e.g., in above-ground and underground storages.

The long-term goal is to produce hydrogen from renewable energy sources but in the near term the cheapest way to produce hydrogen is expected to be by use of fossil fuels, eventually with CO2 capture and storage.

Hydrogen can be produced in stand-alone plants but it may ...
