History of document capture

Document imaging started in the 1980s using specialized hardware for both transforming paper documents to images and recognizing the textual content (using OCR) on machine printed documents. Over time, its widespread use on Microsoft Windows systems helped to commoditize document capture software.

The ability to identify documents and capture OCR metadata from pre-defined locations on paper spurred an advanced form of capture called fixed form processing.
