This chapter concerns itself with places in the material surround as the prac-
tical, situated and emergent accomplishment of participants, and proposes
to study how meaningful places can emerge in and through mobile action-
in-interaction. More specifically, the paper focuses on the detailed ways in
which participants to what one might call an “introductory walk” make the
