1. Introduction: Directive-response sequences in a car
This chapter examines how passengers direct drivers in cars. More specifi-
cally, it focuses on how passengers use directives to make an anticipated
driving action – in this chapter, a turn-at-a-junction – socially salient to the
driver. Directives are thus analysed as an interactional resource that enables
mobility. The chapter also complements Goodwin’s (2000a, 2000b, 2003) re-
