Interactionally generated encounters and
the accomplishment of mutual proximity in mobile
phone conversations
1. Introduction
Research on mobilities has recently coalesced into a specific subfield in what
has been dubbed a “mobility turn” for the social sciences (Urry 2000), link-
ing together various areas of research in which movement, location, space
and temporality are relevant (Cresswell 2006). There has been a reconcep-
