Regional Overview

The African continent has more internally displaced persons (IDPs) than the rest of the world put together and the total is continuing to rise. The number of IDPs in Africa reached 13.5 million by the end of 2001 – an increase of more than 5 million since 1998. For comparison, Africa's refugee population was estimated at 3.6 million in early 2002.

Despite the generally bleak statistics, there have been some positive developments. After 27 years of civil war in Angola, the death of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) rebel leader Jonas Savimbi in February 2002 paved the way for a ceasefire agreement between the two sides in April.
