Asia and the Pacific

Regional Overview

As of early 2002, over 4.6 million people were internally displaced because of armed conflict in Asia and the Pacific, with another 3.4 million exiled across borders as refugees. These figures do not include displacement due to man-made or natural disasters, both of which are major causes of displacement in the region.

Indonesia has been one of the worst hit countries, with a displaced population of 1.3 million. Afghanistan and Sri Lanka both have close to 1 million internally displaced people (IDPs), and there are several hundred thousand in Bangladesh, Burma, India and The Philippines.
