10.1. INTRODUCTION

A sceptical reader might be tempted to fire back with a “Who cares?” Surveillance exists and is becoming more widespread, independently of what the experts think. In addition to presenting the findings of a recent research project and interviews with information technology (IT) professionals on such issues as surveillance and the handling of personal data and privacy in general, my intention is to frame an argument in favour of making IT professionals’ views on these matters count more in the formulation and implementation of the concept of modern surveillance systems.
