In this chapter, I explore why teachers and students might wish to learn about current controversies in the natural sciences and how controversy fits into the goal of combining inquiry and technology to improve science learning. To this end, I provide an overview of the Science Controversies Online Partnerships for Education (SCOPE) project and focus specific attention on what the SCOPE research group has been learning through our research efforts about fostering virtual communities and developing controversy-focused learning opportunities.
