Deciding on Strategy

The most important decision to make before an interview is what its style should be. Do you want to keep it factual, or do you want to put the candidate under pressure? The answer to this may depend on the post for which you are interviewing.

TIP

Allow time before a panel interview for everyone to agree on objectives.

Considering your aims

Keeping your criteria for the job in mind, consider what you want to achieve in the interview. Select a strategy that will help you. If you know the interviewee’s technical skills are right for the job, you may choose to concentrate on their people skills in the interview. Alternatively, you may adopt an aggressive interview style to test the candidate’s reactions under pressure.
