What is Groupware?

Groupware is the term generally used to describe software packages that provide a collaborative work environment for use by employees. Either to allow group communication, decision-making, document sharing or generation, or to provide a means of allowing different parts of an organisation to work through a business process in a shared electronic environment, which would traditionally have been worked through using paper-based systems or face-to-face communications.

Two distinct forms of communication are usually in evidence in Groupware products. These are asynchronous and synchronous.
