It is generally claimed an extranet can improve communication between an organisation, its customers and suppliers and any geographically dispersed employee.
Extranet technologies and systems allow limited access to your Intranet through networks external to your organisation. Depending on whose definition you read, gateways may be provided via the Internet, dial-up connections or privately leased IP VPNs.
Not surprisingly Lotus take a corporate slant in their description of an extranet:
‘An extended Intranet linked across multiple partner enterprises, giving closed, controlled access to information between enterprises’
