It is possible to design buildings to control their internal environments both actively and passively. A passively designed building “dances” with the ambient energy flows around it – a strategic arrangement of the form and fabric of the building captures and stores heat when it is needed, and avoids or releases it when it is not. An active environmental control strategy involves supplying or removing energy from the space through mechanical means such as solar-thermal hydronic heating, air conditioning, or a gas furnace.
