Innovation in Physician Leadership Education

The need for physician leadership education in the new millennium is underscored by the evolving complexity of the U.S. health care system. Traditionally, physician leaders were appointed to leadership positions based on their clinical reputation and personal interest in medical administration. Few of these physicians had formal training in leadership. Although some medical schools have begun to offer dual degrees like the MD-MBA to students interested in medical leadership, the number of U.S. physicians enrolled in this type of program is minimal and insufficient to meet the future leadership needs of the health care system.
