PV SYSTEM DESIGNERS AND NEW SYSTEM OWNERS need to have a good
understanding of how a battery works. This chapter reviews basic battery
terminology. It also discusses battery design features.
PV-generated electrical energy cannot always be used as soon as it is
produced, so it needs to be stored. Energy is not always needed at the same
time as it’s produced. Because of this, PV systems use electrical storage
batteries.
This chapter examines energy storage systems, lead-acid battery func-
tions, and types of batteries. It also reviews sealed batteries, charge con-
trollers, generators, and batteries in standalone PV systems.
Our emphasis will be on lead-acid batteries because of their status and
availability in the PV industry. However, other technologies are experi-
encing great advances, and their prices are dropping. Over the next five
years, you will see many of the new technologies making progress in the
PV world.
