Introduction
Spy movie “bugs” are the classic audio‑surveillance archetype—special agent Bond peering under a lamp to see if anyone is listening, or a stock investor tapping into a telegraph cable in the 1800s.
Bugging and wiretapping used to be technically simple—contact was made with the wire carrying the transmission, or a small microphone was placed near the source of the sound. Most wiretapping was by individuals eavesdropping on gossip or business news, or by law enforcement agents investigating crimes. It was mostly a local phenomenon.
