8 Tourism trades
The purpose of this chapter is to describe the parameters of the tourism industry and to establish the role of the tourism trades, how they relate to each other, the size, influences and trends that sustain them.
Is there a tourism industry? There is a school of thought that suggests that tourism does not exist as an industry since it comprises a large number of independent sectors, many of which are not significantly dependent on tourists or their movements for their existence. In fact, tourism is best viewed through an appraisal of the demand side and the way in which the tourist spend is spread throughout a wide range of primary, secondary and tertiary industries and services as the tourist travels around.
