The Issue: Nuclear Waste
The fundamental issue behind nuclear energy is that of waste storage. Where do nuclear energy generators store the associated nuclear waste? Most nuclear power generators store the radioactive waste on site. There were some industry efforts to store U.S. nuclear waste in a Nevada geologic site. These efforts have not materialized. As one can easily imagine, the waste storage issue and worst-case scenarios brings with it insistence by the citizenry of many municipalities, states, and countries to decrease, not increase, usage of nuclear energy to generate electricity.
