Yield

Generically, the return that someone gets from an investment, usually expressed as a percentage of the acquisition cost. Mostly, however, yield implies the return from income alone and, therefore, takes no account of changes in capital values (see TOTAL RETURN). In the case of a BOND, the yield usually refers to the so-called nominal yield, which is the bond’s annual and fixed COUPON, or DIVIDEND, expressed as a percentage of the market price. In the case of an ORDINARY SHARE, the yield usually refers to the DIVIDEND YIELD, which is the latest full-year dividend paid on each of a company’s shares as a percentage of the market price.
