Chapter 25–The U.S. and EU Data Privacy Shield
What the Facebook privacy issues in the EU, and specifically within Belgium and France, brought to the fore was the swift divergence of attitudes between the U.S. & EU on information privacy. Previously, the huge global behemoths like Facebook, Microsoft and Google had done business within the EU single market under a data privacy agreement termed a Safe Harbor that had been agreed back in 2000.
The EU however was undergoing a sea change in its views on data privacy and was in the process of rewriting their current legislation to make it more relevant and unified across all 28 states as the legislation at the time dated back to 1995.
