Internet Protocol, Version 4 (IPv4)

IP was developed approximately 20 years ago for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). The DoD needed a way to interconnect the various brands of proprietary computers and their equally proprietary support networks across a common internetwork. This was achieved by way of a layered protocol that insulated applications from networking hardware. This protocol uses a model that is slightly different from the OSI Reference Model. It is known as the TCP/IP Reference Model.
