SCHEME FOR ROUTING UPDATES
Figure 5-1 shows the general scheme for a RIP routing update. Router A advertises the address 172.16.0.0 to routers B and C. This update occurs during time period 1. (The notation 1a means the event occurs at about the same time as event 1, and the same idea is conveyed with 2, 2a, etc.) Since A is directly attached to 176.16.0.0, it advertises a metric (hop count) of 1 to this address.
