In this chapter, you come to grips with Messages, Apple’s instant-messaging app, and Notes, its note-taking and sharing app. Messages lets you communicate using the iPhone, the iPad, the Mac, and Apple Watch. Notes enables you to take notes on the iPhone, the iPad, and the Mac.

Getting the iMessage

The Messages app lets you exchange short text messages with any cellphone that supports the SMS (Short Message Service) protocol. You can also send and receive MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) messages, which can include pictures, contacts, videos, audio recordings, and locations, with any cellphone that supports the MMS protocol.

Beyond SMS and MMS, which your cellular provider offers, your iPhone also supports the iMessage protocol. iMessage uses an Apple-provided service to send and receive unlimited messages with text, pictures, contacts, videos, and locations without going through your carrier.
